I don't want to go fight wars. In fact, I am very much against
intervention and believe the US played a proper role in one war in the
last 97 years.
Having said that, let me ask you a question:
Having said that, let me ask you a question:
When someone says that he wants to kill you, what do you do?
My problem with Pauliacs is that they don't seem to realise that, while
America's meddling in the ME since the end of WWI has, in fact, played a
role in some of the hatred towards the US, it is NOT the primary
cause. Islamists - I do not use the term interchangeably with Muslims -
want to destroy or convert more than just Israel and America. What
have countries like Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, etc., done in the
Middle East? Have they "occupied" Muslim lands?
There are public schools in Denmark, for example, where Jewish children are not allowed to attend because of the demands of Islamists. What has Denmark done to Iran, for example?

If your daughter came to you and said that her husband repeatedly said that he would kill her, would you tell her to "talk" to him? Would you want him to get a gun, if you could prevent it?
During the Cold War, MAD worked because, while they might have been insane on some level, Stalin, Khrushchev, and even Castro were not actively seeking to bring about Armageddon. This is an important thing to remember because it crucially separates them from the some of the nuts in countries like Iran.
When the nut, the Ayatollah Khomeini* came to power in 1979, he banned the even nuttier nuts, the 12th'ers. His successor, Ayatollah Khamenei, other mullahs, and Ahmadinejad are 12th'ers. They believe that they have to cause massive death and destruction to bring about the return of a 6 year-old boy that disappeared some 1300 years ago. 12th'ers and many Salafists are not comparable to Christians either. While I am an atheist, I attended the Anglican Church as a child on occasion and am familiar with the Bible. I don't recall there being any scripture that urges followers of Christ to hasten Armageddon. I also know that there is nothing in the Torah to suggest this.
I think that it is simply naive to believe that "being nice and talking" to Iran will bring about peace. I DO NOT WANT A WAR WITH IRAN. Unfortunately, unless something happens WITHIN IRAN, I fear that is what will eventually happen.
* If you think that I am being a bigot, then read his Resaleh Towzih al-Masael. Apart from learning that thighing - rubbing your penis between the legs of babies as young as age 9 months - is permissible, you will also be advised that the one, the only, the Grand Poobah himself has ruled on items such as:
#2631. "It is loathsome to eat the meat of horse and mule and donkey and if somebody makes coitus with them, that is an intercourse, they become unlawful and they must be taken out of the city and sold elsewhere."
#2632. "If they have intercourse with a cow and sheep and camel their urine and dung become unclean and drinking their milk will also be unlawful and they must be killed and burned without delay, and the person who had intercourse with them must pay money to the owner. Further, if he had intercourse with any beast its milk becomes unlawful."
Further, anyone, who would include Cynthia McKinney in an "open endorsement" for POTUS, is automatically disqualified in my book. I agree with a lot of what Ron Paul believes, but he is just plain nutty in other regards.
Yes, she was against the Iraq War .... just like Ron Paul and I. Yes, she was against the Libyan War ... just like Ron Paul and I. But, damn it, Pauliacs, McKinney is an avowed Socialist, who supported "Qaddafi-style" Socialism
- no word now on what kind of Socialism she supports currently since
the Lypsynka of Libya is now pushing up Sodom's Apples somewhere in the
Libyan desert.
". . .The second was Cynthia McKinney. Yes, you read that correctly, Ron Paul endorsed Cynthia McKinney in 2008. For those who do not know, Cynthia McKinney is a certifiably insane anti-American anti-Semitic lunatic. She first came to widespread public attention when she was arrested for punching out a member of the capitol police who tried to stop her when she wasn’t wearing her pin. Cynthia McKinney is so crazy that she got defeated in a primary by a guy who thought Guam might tip over and capsize. McKinney was once arrested by the Israelis while trying to give aid to Hamas and penned a bizarre anti-American and anti-Israeli screed. See more of her anti-Americanism here."
How does a bloody Libertarian "openly endorse" a Socialist? Ever?
How does a Libertarian - a person who advocates liberty - include a woman, who supports dictators like Moammar Qaddafi and totalitarian regimes like Iran, in an "open endorsement" for President of the United States of America? Ever?
How does a Libertarian, who claims that he is not a racist or an anti-Semite endorse or even associate with a woman, who sought to pass a bill, as a Congresswoman, that would require the release the government's "secret records" on all
of the Jews on House committees? Ever?
How does a Libertarian, who claims he is not a conspiracy theorist, include in an "open endorsement" a woman, who demanded a new House Select Committee On Assassinations
formed to investigate the CIA's involvement into the "assassinations" of
Tupac Shakur, Soulja Slim, Biggie Smalls, Freakie Tay, Mac Dre, Yaki
Kadafi, Scott La Rock, Big L, and Jam Master Jay? Ever?
How does a doctor include a woman, who has claimed that the Red Cross was a conspirator with the Federal government in the mass execution of 5,000 "prisoners" in a Louisiana swamp after Hurricane Katrina, in an "open endorsement" for President of the United States of America? Ever?
Why did he include her? Because she was against Iraq? Against Bush? Because she might not be a Islamist, but approves of their agenda as it pertains to genocide against Jews? Because she is a dummy, a dhimmi and an Useful Infidel? I don't know. You tell me, Pauliacs.
There is a reason that Cynthia McKinney makes it on my list of "Totally Batshit Crazy: The Six Most Insane People To Ever Run For President" list. (She's #6. You ought to see who's on first!"
Anyhoo, you see, guys, this is where you and Paul fall apart and why Ron Paul will never be elected President of the United States of America. I am far from a warmonger. My foreign policy isn't far from that of Ron Paul, but I am not naive nor is Ron Paul representative of the majority of the American public. Look, I like Rand Paul, but the problem with Ron Paul isn't entirely the message. It's the messenger ... and 10% the message.
In February 2011, Gallup reported that 63% of Americans supported Israel and only 17% supported the Palestinians. 68% supported Israel and only 19% supported the Palestinian Authority. 80% of Republicans supported Israel over the Palestinians while 57% of Democrats and Independents do. How can Ron Paul win the GOP nomination against those numbers? Furthermore, a poll in November of 2011 by the group Greenberg Quinlan Rosner found that 52.3% of Americans rate Netanyahu positively, compared to 51.5%
for Obama. The poll's findings reflected similar polls conducted by Democratic polling groups in the United States.
Now, you can dismiss all of the poll results out-of-hand and you can scream "Israel Firster!" at the top of your lungs, but you do so at your own foolish disregard. I am not making an argument for Israel, against the Palestinians, and for war against Iran. I am telling you that the majority of Americans are not going to going along with some of Paul's more tinfoil hat proclamations and they are NOT going to believe that Iran, with a nuclear weapon, is not a danger. NOT. NOT. NOT. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER.
Why? Because, unlike most of the West that disregarded Hitler's own words in Mein Kampf, they believe that when someone says that they want to wipe you, the Great Satan, off of the map -- so to speak -- they mean it.
"Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall
be unfurled, there will [America’s] heart, her benedictions and her
prayers be. But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.
She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is
the champion and vindicator only of her own …"
- John Quincy Adams, 4 July 1821
- John Quincy Adams, 4 July 1821
The United States shouldn't be the world's policeman, but saying that nutters in Iran should be prevented, if at all humanly possible, from getting their hands on nuclear weapons is "championing and vindicating our own freedom and independence."

I don't agree with everything you wrote about Iran, Sophie:
"He banned the even nuttier nuts?" The article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelvers refers to "the Twelver Ayatollah Khomeini" and it says that "approximately 85% of Shi‘a are Twelvers." "They believe that they have to cause massive death and destruction to bring about the return?" I found no reference to this. The most authoritative reference to Iran's plans to start a war to hasten the coming of the 12th Imam was this:
"Critics of the Islamic Republic allege that Ahmadinejad and the supreme leader would even go so far as to hasten a nuclear showdown and cataclysmic strike -- perhaps an attack on Israel and inevitable retaliation -- to hasten the arrival of the 12th Imam." See:
http://worldnews.about.com/od/iran/f/12thimam.htm
That's it! Anybody can say that. I don't see any foundation upon which it was said except the words "allege," "would," and "perhaps." Which critics does it refer to? It's like claiming that "some people say" is one's authority.
In an interview with NBC's Ann Curry, Ahmadinejad said he can do nothing to hasten the coming of the 12th Imam:

In his speech in 2009 at the United Nations, Ahmadinejad spoke, not of starting a war to hasten the coming of the 12th Imam, but of "waiting patiently for the Imam to return:"

"The article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelvers refers to "the Twelver Ayatollah Khomeini"
The Ayatollah Khomeini's ancestors were from the kingdom of Oudh in northern India, whose rulers were Twelver Shia Muslims of Persian origin, but his biggest personal influences were Sufi, not Salafist.
Similar to Christian with Christ, the orthodox position of Shi'ite Islam is that man is powerless to bring forth or prompt the return of the Mahdi, or 12th Imam. In Iran, however, there is a group called the Hojjatieh, who believe that humans can stir up chaos to encourage him to return. In the West, the members of Hojjatieh (and their related groups in other countries, who subscribe to the same apocalyptic sentiments) are referred to as "Twelvers" or "12th'ers."
On 12 August 1983, the Ayatollah Khomeini banned the group because they rejected a one of the fundamental precepts of the Iranian Revolution: Vilayat-i Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist). IOW, the 12th'ers, in the view of Khomeini, were opposed to the very idea of an Islamic republic "because it would hinder the 12 Imam's return on account of it being too just and peaceful."
Ahmadinejad is said to be a member of the Hojjatieh. His spiritual advisor, Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, who is an ULTRA-conservative, hardliner, whom Iranians refer to as the "crocodile" and the "crazed one." According to reports, at least 4 of Ahmadinejad's 21 cabinet members are members of Hojjatieh.
Hojjatieh is an underground, Messianic cult. It is nearly the equivalent of Heaven's Gate. You might be fine with nutters like them, but I would prefer that their fingers be far, far, faraway from a nuke button.
Please don't give me links of Ahmadinejad interviews with the West. I can give you links of speeches of his and other Islamist leaders in the Middle East that say something entirely different.
Remember the kindly, old gentleman that was the "spiritual leader" of Tahrir Square and was going to lead the Egyptians to a new, peaceful democracy? Do you want to see him praising Hitler and talking about how the Nazis were just a good start?
I have no problem with Islam, as a whole. I have a HUGE problem with Islamists.
Happy Holidays!
