Bush and many like him are followers of Wilsonian foreign policy. It
was Woodrow Wilson, who introduced the ideas of “spreading democracy to
the four corners of the world” and “making the world safe for
democracy.”
What neither the democracy spreaders during the Wilson era nor those
of the Bush/Obama (“liberate” Libya – tell Mubarak to leave so that
“democracy” can come to Egypt) era fail to understand is that democracy
is not an “idea” that can be transported like a “Room in a Box.”
Democracy is dependent upon a civil society. The civil society is the
foundation and it is fundamental. Without a civil society, democracy is
impossible.
I never supported the ground war in Afghanistan. I had absolutely no
problem with turning the entire country into a parking lot. As a Brit
by birth, I already knew why they call the tribal lands known as
“Afghanistan” the “Meatgrinder of Empires.” I also had no use for the
invasion of Iraq. My personal position is when people want to kill each
other, LET THEM.
I’m sorry to say it, but I am tired of pretending that we are somehow
equal to members of a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, child-abusing,
xenophobic, tribalistic, antisemitic, Christophobic, maniacal,
homicidal, suicidal, totalitarian, 7th century death cult.
I do not equate all Muslims with Islamists, but when Islamists decide
to grow up and join the rest of us in the 21st century, I’ll give more
than a flying fig if they escape a direct hit from a predator drone…and,
as a woman, I hope that drone hits their balls first.
