Idiot Big Brother

The prospect of NSA abuse is now a reality.

By Mark Steyn

On Thursday, the Washington Post’s revelation of thousands upon thousands of National Security Agency violations of both the law and supposed privacy protections included this fascinating detail:

A “large number” of Americans had their telephone calls accidentally intercepted by the NSA when a top-secret order to eavesdrop on multiple phone lines for reasons of national security confused the international code for Egypt (20) with the area code for Washington (202).

Seriously.

I enjoy as much as the next chap all those Hollywood conspiracy thrillers about the all-powerful security state — you know the kind of thing, where the guy’s on the lam and he stops at a diner at a windswept one-stoplight hick burg in the middle of nowhere and decides to take the risk of making one 15-second call from the payphone, and as he dials the last digit there’s a click in a basement in Langley, and even as he’s saying hello the black helicopters are already descending on him. It’s heartening to know that, if I ever get taken out at a payphone, it will be because some slapdash timeserving pen-pusher mistyped the code for Malaysia (60) as that of New Hampshire (603).

The Egypt/Washington industrial-scale wrong number is almost too perfectly poignant a vignette at the end of a week in which hundreds are dead on the streets of Cairo. On the global scene, America has imploded: Its leaders have no grasp of its national interests, never mind any sense of how to achieve them. The assumption that we are in the early stages of “the post-American world” is now shared by everyone from General Sisi to Vladimir Putin. General Sisi, I should add, is Egypt’s new strongman, not Putin’s characterization of Obama. Meanwhile, in contrast to its accelerating irrelevance overseas, at home Washington’s big bloated blundering bureaucratic security state expands daily. It’s easier to crack down on 47 Elm Street than Benghazi.

Perhaps this is unavoidable. A couple of months back, I quoted Tocqueville’s prescient words from almost two centuries ago: Although absolute monarchy theoretically “clothed kings with a power almost without limits,” in practice “the details of social life and of individual existence ordinarily escaped his control.” In other words, the king couldn’t do it even if he wanted to. What would happen, Tocqueville wondered, if administrative capability were to evolve to bring “the details of social life and of individual existence” within His Majesty’s oversight? That world is now upon us. Today, the king concedes he most certainly can do it, but assures us not to worry, he doesn’t really want to. “If you look at the reports,” said President Obama earlier this month, “even the disclosures that Mr. Snowden’s put forward, all the stories that have been written, what you’re not reading about is the government actually abusing these programs and, you know, listening in on people’s phone calls or inappropriately reading people’s e-mails. What you’re hearing about is the prospect that these could be abused.”

But that was a week ago. And the “prospect” is now a reality: “actual abuse” — including “listening in on people’s phone calls” and “inappropriately reading people’s e-mails” — occurs daily. In early 2012, “actual abuse” was occurring at the rate of ten “incidents” a day — and “incident” is a term of art that can cover hundreds of violations of thousands or even millions of citizens.

Privacy is dying in all technologically advanced nations, and it may simply be a glum fact of contemporary existence that the right to live an unmonitored life is now obsolete unless one wishes to relocate to upcountry villages in Somalia or Waziristan. Nevertheless, even by the standards of other Western nations, America’s loss of privacy is deeply disturbing. Its bureaucracy is bigger and better funded, and its response to revelations of its abuse of power is to make it bigger and better funded and more bureaucratic still. For example, after multiple significant violations of the law in 2009, the NSA’s “oversight staff” was quadrupled. Quadrupled! Just like that! And what was the result of putting four times as many salaried, benefited, pensionable, fully credentialed government-licensed “overseers” in place? The rate of NSA violations increased dramatically through 2011. Who would have thought it? In the first quarter of 2012 the NSA’s executive-order violations were running at almost twice the rate of what they were in the second quarter of 2011. Maybe if they’d octupled the number of “oversight staff,” all these overseers would have been able to keep pace with the rampaging lawlessness.

Or maybe the oversight is a lot of hooey anyway. The Egyptian dialing-code fiasco, for example, was never passed on to the NSA’s “oversight staff,” but it was the subject of a “quality assurance review,” which sounds like the sort of follow-up you get when you buy a fridge from Sears. Maybe they could just have NSA customer-service representatives announcing that your call may be monitored for quality-control purposes at the start of every telephone conversation. Of course, most customer-service representatives are based in India (telephone code 91) but there’s a sporting chance the NSA would confuse it with Kansas (code 913), which could do wonders for the employment rate.

NSA personnel additionally fall under the external oversight of the FISA Amendment Act, which means the Department of Justice and Office of the Director of National Intelligence. A leaked document instructs NSA agents to remove all details of the “targeting rationale” except for “one short sentence” in generic language. An actual example from the leaked document:

“Mohammad Badguy was on the buddy list of al Qaeda in Mogadishu, Somalia.”

That’s way too much information. In order to comply with federal oversight, it should be amended to:

“Selector was found on buddy list of al Qaeda in Somalia.”

“Selector was found on selector list of al-Selecta in Selectistan” would probably work, too.

Okay. Well, how about this Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that has to sign off on everything? The chief judge of the FISC court, Reggie B. Walton, says that he can only “rely upon the accuracy of the information that is provided to the Court.” So, if it sounds kosher, it probably is.

I once bought my daughter a Siamese kitten in rural Québec and drove her back to my home in New Hampshire. At the border post, the guard leaned in the window and said, “You better have some paperwork for that cat.” I handed over the official form from the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec. The officer stared at it for a few seconds, and then asked, “Do you understand French?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Does this seem on the level to you?”

“Yes,” I said. She waved us through.

That’s basically what FISA court “oversight” boils down to. And, insofar as they decide it isn’t on the level, it’s usually after the fact.

What does that leave? Congressional oversight? Senator Dianne Feinstein said that she had not seen the 2012 NSA audit on its 2,776 legal violations until the Washington Post asked her about it. Which means until Edward Snowden brought it to her attention. So she’s just another rubber stamp, too. Most nations that spy on their own citizens manage to make do with one fig leaf of accountability, but in money-no-object Washington there are fig leaves without end.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reports that the IRS is continuing to target American citizens according to their political ideology — and that’s before they have your Obamacare records to frolic and gambol in.

But, like Obama says, it’s merely a theoretical “prospect” of abuse. You’d have to be paranoid to think it could actually happen . . .

SoRo:

From the WaPo:

The leader of the secret court that is supposed to provide critical oversight of the government’s vast spying programs said that its ability to do so is limited and that it must trust the government to report when it improperly spies on Americans.

The chief judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court said the court lacks the tools to independently verify how often the government’s surveillance breaks the court’s rules that aim to protect Americans’ privacy. Without taking drastic steps, it also cannot check the veracity of the government’s assertions that the violations its staff members report are unintentional mistakes.

No wonder the Court approves government requests 99.97% of the time.

President Obama recently said:

‘If people can’t trust not only the executive branch but also don’t trust Congress, and don’t trust federal judges, to make sure that we’re abiding by the Constitution with due process and rule of law, then we’re going to have some problems here.’

– President Barack Obama, 7 June 2013

Washington, we have a problem.

Unbalanced And Unsustainable – If Something Cannot Go On Forever, Then It Will Stop

By Jeremy Warner

If something cannot go on for ever, Herb Stein, one time economic adviser to President Richard Nixon, famously remarked, it will stop. Yet sometimes, it seems to take an awfully long time to grind to a halt.

Take Britain's unbalanced form of economic growth. If anything was going to kill this apparently unsustainable form of economic advancement off for good, you might have thought that the worst banking crisis in more than a hundred years would do it.

But no. To the extent that economic growth has returned to these shores, it looks very much like the old type – heavily dependent on consumption even though real incomes continue to be squeezed. Ergo, we are still eating into grossly inadequate savings rates, or taking on debt, in order to spend.

Nor is it just households. Despite all the austerity rhetoric, the public sector is continuing to spend approximately £100bn a year more than it takes in in tax receipts. Ann Pettifor of Prime Economics has come up with a great soundbite to describe our addiction to spending beyond our means – calling Britain an "Alice in Wongaland" economy (after the payday loan company Wonga). I wish I'd thought of that one.

In any case, all this hot weather has apparently gone to our heads, and we have again been spending like drunken sailors without a care for the consequences.

Another of Herb's observations was that "economists are very good at saying that something cannot go on forever, but not so good at saying when it will stop". This is especially the case when public policy is hell bent on trying to sustain what economists widely regard as the unsustainable – through help to buy, funding for lending, and so on.

But there is actually another possibility – that actually what's happening isn't as unsustainable as it seems. Britain's economy has long been highly dependent on consumption, so dependent in fact that you are really not going to see any kind of a significant economic recovery until consumption starts picking up again. The same is true of the housing market, which has long been a disproportionately large part of the UK economy.

One of the reasons – in fact the main reason – Britain has thus far trailed other major economies in economic recovery is that consumption has failed to come back after the shock of the banking crisis in the same way as it has elsewhere. Well now it appears to be, and the UK is therefore seeing relatively strong growth compared to others.

Of course, if this kind of unearned growth went on for a long time, then it would be a cause for some concern, but as a way of kick-starting the economy and getting it working properly again, this revival in consumption is an overwhelmingly positive development. But if there is still no evidence a year from now of it being backed up by higher business investment and improvements in net trade, then we do indeed need to start worrying.

Why Barack Obama Doesn't Care About The Law

By Donald Sensing

Understand that this federal court ruling means exactly nothing.

Does this ruling bind this president from doing what he wants to do? Of course not. No one in America has both the power and the determination to hinder Obama from doing whatever he wants.

As I was discussing Obama's totalist ideology this week with a relative, I pointed out that Obama could ask a parallel question of the federal courts that Josef Stalin asked when it was suggested to him that he should treat Russian Catholics better to gain favor with the Pope as the Nazi threat loomed: "The Pope!" Stalin exclaimed. "How many divisions has he got?"

And so with President Obama and federal courts' rulings: they have no means of enforcing their rulings. As any intemperate two-year old knows, you can do anything you want until someone compels you to stop. And so Obama can order whatever he wishes until he is compelled to stop.

The courts lacks the means of such compulsion. That leaves the Congress to rein in the executive. (Please excuse me while I erupt in peals of derisive laughter.) Congress's only authority to rein in a president consists of two things:
  • Withhold funding for departments and agencies under executive authority, or
  • Impeach him.
That's it. (In 1834, the Congress voted to censure President Andrew Jackson. Jackson correctly declared that there was no Constitutional authority for it and basically told the Congress they could either impeach him or get stuffed, although he put it a little more pithily.)

Since those are the only two options available, and since the Congress is controlled by the Democrats (the Republican majority in the House meaning nothing here), neither loss of funding nor impeachment will ever be used to restrain this president.

The goal of the entire Democrat party is to be the permanent, sole political authority in the country. This is the actual transformation that Barack Obama promised to great applause in his 2008 campaign. And we are getting transformed good and hard:

[I]nstead of the new birth of hope and change, it is the transformation of a constitutional republic operating under laws passed by democratically accountable legislators into a servile nation under the management of an unaccountable administrative state. The real import of Barack Obama’s political career will be felt long after he leaves office, in the form of a permanently expanded state that is more assertive of its own interests and more ruthless in punishing its enemies. At times, he has advanced this project abetted by congressional Democrats, as with the health-care law’s investiture of extraordinary powers in the executive bureaucracy, but he also has advanced it without legislative assistance — and, more troubling still, in plain violation of the law. President Obama and his admirers choose to call this “pragmatism,” but what it is is a mild expression of totalitarianism, under which the interests of the country are conflated with those of the president’s administration and his party. Barack Obama is the first president of the democracy that John Adams warned us about.

Obama can do this not because the Constitution or law authorize it. Most definitely they actually prohibit it. He is getting away with it because there is no one who can stop him and almost no one who wants to stop him. No one, and I mean absolutely no one, in the Democrat party is in the slightest interested in reining in Obama's expansion of executive diktat because they know what few of the rest of us are awakening to: the Democrats are never going to lose that executive authority again. Let me be clear, with a promise to elucidate another day: there is never going to be another Republican president. Ever.

The media will not examine Obama's imperialist manner because they do not want to. They agree with it. The courts are literally unable to enforce their rulings contra this administration; Obama ignores them at will and without consequence. The Republicans are dominated by the Political Class and lack the numbers, influence, collective will and ideological conviction to rein in the administration even if they had the ability to do so, which they don't.

For example, immigration:

...after Congress had unequivocally rejected another piece of immigration reform, the so-called DREAM Act, that the president had supported, he simply instituted it unilaterally, as though he had the authority to declare an amnesty himself. He then did away with criminal-background checks for those to be amnestied, also on his own authority.

This is a president who knows that he does not need to make anyone "happy," that there in fact is no political base that must be appeased or pleased - where else will the base go? The president of the United States is now quite literally a dictate-er: he orders what he wishes and implements what he chooses.

There is no check or balance any longer, not even the Congress's power to control the federal purse. There is no federal purse to control. There are only years-long series of continuing resolutions and special appropriations, all funded with trillions of dollars of borrowed fiat money that no creditor anywhere in the world expects will be repaid. President Obama has a government credit card with no debt limit. The power to spend is the power to control, and that is what he is doing.

The Left Beclowns Itself

Forget Fonzie and the shark.  The Left has jumped the rodeo clown...

On Tuesday, the Missouri State National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) issued a statement asking for federal involvement in the case of a rodeo clown who wore an Obama mask and then asked the crowd if they’d like to see Obama run down by a bull. “The activities at the Missouri State Fair targeting and inciting violence against our President are serious and warrant a full review by both the Secret Service and the Justice Department,” said State President Mary Ratliff.
Some people need to read Watts v United States .

‘I have already received my draft classification as 1-A and I have got to report for my physical this Monday coming. I am not going. If they ever make me carry a rifle the first man I want to get in my sights is L.B.J.’
- Robert Watts, who, for the record, was a black man

A federal statute makes it a crime to ‘knowingly and willfully’ threaten the life of the President. Watts was arrested, tried, and convicted in federal court for violating this statute. Watts argued the statement ‘did not constitute a ‘threat’ within the language of the statute.’

The Court ruled that Watts’ statement was political hyperbole and not a true threat.
The Supreme Court:

‘The language of the political arena… is often vituperative, abusive, and inexact…context, and regarding the expressly conditional nature of the statement and the reaction of the listeners.’

I dare these fools to arrest the rodeo CLOWN.

When even Jehmu ‘Tucker Carlson, you’re nothing but a white, bow-tying boy!’ Greene is laughing her ass off at the NAACP, the organisation has officially become a parody of itself.

Too many of these assh0les really want a new Sedition Act of 1798, which made it a crime to criticise the POTUS. Fortunately, a very liberal Supreme Court handed down Brandenburg in 1969 making the revival of any such monstrosity HIGHLY unlikely.

This is one of the main reasons that I hope Hillary is not elected.

After this week’s racial brouhaha over a rodeo CLOWN and the past 5 years of ‘You can’t criticse the first black president, you racist!’ we know what the presidency of the First Woman…and the First Hispanic…and the First Gay, etc, will look like if they are Democrats.

Should she become President, we will be in for 4/8 years of:

‘That’s raaaacist sexist! You cannot mock or criticise The First Black Womyn President!!!’

And, when she leaves office, it will be:

‘That’s raaaacist sexist xenophobic and raaaacist! You cannot mock or criticise The First Black Womyn Hispanic President!!!’

And, after TFHP leaves office, it will be:

‘That’s raaaacist sexist xenophobic and raaaacist homophobic! You cannot mock or criticise The First Black Womyn Hispanic Gay President!!!’

And, after TFGP leaves office, it will be:

‘That’s raaaacist sexist xenophobic and raaaacist homophobic Islamophobic! You cannot mock or criticise The First Black Womyn Hispanic Gay Muslim President!!!’

As long as an identity politics Democrat is POTUS, it will be:

Rinse, lather, repeat.

The last refuge of 'progressive' scoundrels is 'You can't say that.  It's XXXX!'

Except, of course, when they are out of power, then they can say ANYTHING because dissent becomes patriotic.

'I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration.'

- Hillary Clinton, 28 April 2003 at the annual Democratic Party Jefferson-Jackson-Bailey Day fund raising dinner in Connecticut.

Man, Who Likes To Dress Up As Dog, Arrested For Having Sex With Cat

Well, I am going to mock it...and 'Mr Anonymous'...

From the Daily Mail:

A man who enjoys dressing up as a dog has been arrested for having sex with a cat in Idaho.

Ryan Havens Tannenholz, 28, is accused of sexually abusing the pet several times over the course of a year.

Police arrested the man from Boise, Idaho, on August 1st, on six felony counts of crimes against nature and one misdemeanor count of cruelty to an animal.

Tannenholz is said to be a 'furry' - the name given to a member of a community of people who dress as animals.

According to Flayrah, a site dedicated to furries, he had a number of animal alter-egos including a dog, a wolf, a white husky and a fox.

Photos on a social media site posted by Tannenholz appear to show him in character as a creature called Bubblegum.

He is currently being held in custody in lieu of a $250,000 bond and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

An arrest warrant was issued on July 31, and he was arrested on August 1. Police did not specify how the alleged activities came to light.

On Tannenholz's Bubblegum Husky website, he describes his interest in cats and reveals his own pet cat named Einstein.

He writes: 'Have you ever been on the internet and seen one of those cat videos? Bubblegum Husky sure has and man, I'll tell you what, they really get me going!

'Cats are so furry, soft plush and loving. Plus, only Bubblegum Husky can REALLY appreciate how truly great these furry felines truly are.'

UPDATE:

I got a message from 'Mr Anonymous.'  He says that this is his picture:

Ryan Havens Tannenholz

He says that he is NOT Ryan Havens Tannenholz.  The above photo was the mug shot released by the Ada County Sheriff's Office in the case, but it's definitely, positively, absolutely NOT him.

You be the judge.

Also,'Mr Anonymous' wishes to correct the record:  The photo of the cat above is definitely, positively, absolutely NOT Ryan Havens Tannenholz's pussy.  Well, OK.  Whatever.

Finally, 'Mr Anonymous' claims that he Ryan Havens Tannenholz did not have sex with his OWN furry critter.  He just raped another feline...MULTIPLE TIMES.

Who knows?  Maybe, 'Mr Anonymous' will send us a pic of the feline survivor of rape.  Perhaps, it will look something like this....

Yeah, 'Mr Furry's' new look is 'Rascally Rabbit.'  'Debauched Dog' has been abandoned.
