Obama: Americans, Trust Your Government. Africans, Be Wary of the United States.

Political Cartoons by Steve Breen

More Obama schizophrenia:

‘Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices.

- President Barack Obama, 5 May 2013

‘You will always find the extended hand of a friend in the United States of America. When we look at what other countries are doing in Africa, I think our only advice is make sure it’s a good deal for Africa. If somebody says they want to come build something here, are they hiring African workers? If somebody says that they want to help you develop your natural resources, how much of the money is staying in Africa? … Don’t just assume that folks come here and they’re automatically benefiting Africans. And that includes the United States. Ask questions in terms of what we do.’

- President Barack Obama, 30 June 2013

So, Americans are supposed to trust their government, especially when it is run by The Lightbringer, who possesses the Blessed Touch of Tolerance, Diversity, Understanding, Truth, and Reconciliation™ that can erase the past sins of the United States and those of gazillions of bigoted Americans, but Africans should not trust it.

Gotcha.

It makes total Obama Sense™.

And, more pratfalls on the world stage by our diplomatic representatives:

‘Spying on allies is not unusual.’

- John Kerry

‘Bugging friends is unacceptable.’

- German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Smart Lurch Power.

And, one more...

'In order to do this, the U.S. Government must deal with the Egyptian Government.  THIS IS THE GOVERNMENT THAT YOU AND YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS ELECTED.  EVEN IF YOU VOTED FOR OTHERS, I DON’T THINK THE ELECTED NATURE OF THIS GOVERNMENT IS SERIOUSLY IN DOUBT.  Throughout Egypt’s post-revolution series of elections, the United States took the position that we would work with whoever won elections that met international standards, and this is what we have done.

Because many in the Egyptian Government are affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood or its Freedom and Justice Party, the U.S. Government must work with them across a huge range of issues: commercial, cultural, political, agricultural, trade, and our consular immigration issues.

I know that some would counter that the U.S. Government, specifically the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, has had contact with the Muslim Brotherhood for more than two decades.  Is this not, they might ask, evidence of a long-term plan or conspiracy to support the Muslim Brotherhood to replace the government of former President Hosni Mubarak?

An understanding of how nations deal with each other will show that I believe such speculation is groundless.  Like many other countries, the United States--in addition to dealing with the political actors running any given government--also maintains contacts with those out of power.  This is in keeping with our belief in universal rights and values:  WE SEEK TO ENSURE THAT THE DIVERSE VIEWS OF ALL CITIZENS ARE FAIRLY REPRESENTED AND THAT THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS ARE RESPECTED.  It also is consistent with America's self-interest:  today's political outcasts may be tomorrow's leaders, and therefore it is wise to get to know them and their views.  This may seem like a very simple picture compared to the complicated scenarios proposed by some.  But I think if you look at history, you will find that the simple explanations invariably are the correct ones.

AFTER 30 YEARS OF POLITICAL REPRESSION AND THE RESULTING LACK OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAKING POLITICAL DECISIONS, IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE THAT SOME WOULD RESORT TO CONSPIRACY THEORIES TO EXPLAIN WHAT THEY SEE AND HEAR.  BUT, IN MY VIEW, EGYPT DESERVES BETTER.  EGYPT DESERVES CITIZENS WITH OPEN MINDS WHO ARE UNAFRAID TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES.  This is the first step toward becoming invested in the future, toward planning and building a new Egypt that will surpass the old.

SOME SAY THAT STREET ACTION WILL PRODUCE BETTER RESULTS THAN ELECTIONS.  TO BE HONEST, MY GOVERNMENT AND I ARE DEEPLY SKEPTICAL.

Egypt needs stability to get its economic house in order, and more violence on the streets will do little more than add new names to the lists of martyrs.  INSTEAD, I RECOMMEND EGYPTIANS GET ORGANIZED (but, obviously, not like the Tamarod or anything that might force out our partners, the MoFoBros – SoRo) Join or start a political party that reflects your values and aspirations.  Egyptians need to know a better path forward.  This will take time.  You will have to roll up your sleeves and work hard.  Progress will be slow and you often will feel frustrated.  But there is no other way.

Ladies and gentlemen, democracy is a means, not an end.  There is no winner, except for the people, who have the right to choose.  They are the real power brokers, and it is your responsibility to help them see your vision.  Every day, my colleagues and I at the U.S. Embassy meet with Egyptians from across the political spectrum.  If you belong to a party or a trend and feel that we have overlooked your views, please tell me, and get in touch with us.  We want to get to know you, because you never know what tomorrow may bring.

Let me end my remarks by reiterating our policy toward Egypt:   the Government of the United States of America supports Egypt, its people, and ITS GOVERNMENT.  The U.S. Government, which represents the interests and desires of the American people, wants Egypt to succeed.  WE WANT EGYPTIANS TO HAVE THE SAME BENEFITS OF LIVING IN A FREE AND DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY THAT WE ENJOY.  We want Egyptians to have THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE THEIR LEADERS, PEACEFULLY, TO SAY WHAT THEY THINK, TO BELIEVE AND WORSHIP AS THEIR CONSCIENCES DICTATE, TO ASSOCIATE WITH WHOMEVER THEY WISH, AND TO HAVE FAIR LAWS THAT APPLY EQUALLY TO ALL, IRRESPECTIVE OF STATUS OR WEALTH.

Egyptians, like Americans and other people living in democracies everywhere, must find a way to live and pursue their dreams together.'

- Anne Patterson, United States Ambassador to Egypt, 18 June 2013

All that I will say after this tripe is this:  Neither President Franklin Delano Roosevelt nor United States Ambassador to Germany, William E Dodd, would have told the Jews to respect Hitler, who was also democratically-elected, and work with the Nazi government to 'find a way to live and pursue their dreams together.'

Yesterday, the equivalent of 65.1 Americans took to the street in protest over economic imbecility, soaring food and fuel prices with their attendant scarcity, skyrocketing crime, barbarity against the Copts, regime brutality, hopelessness for generations of Egyptians, etc. Try wrapping your mind around that number. It’s like more than half of a year’s Superbowl audience getting off of their sofas and taking to the streets in protests.

One wonders if President Obama seriously wants to or even can maintain his position of backing the MoFoBros in the wake of the largest political protest in the history of civilisation – all due to community organising, which I believe he claims to know something about and supports. Does he really want to be on ‘the wrong side of history,’ again?

Sadly, the answer is not as simple as it should be. Obama has the greatest ability of anyone that I’ve have ever seen to refuse to assess himself, understand when his policies are failing, ant to change course, but can he possibly continuing backing the Morsi government after the largest protest in world history?

He’s already become the ‘Rodney Dangerfield of World Politics.’ Polls from across the Muslim World show that they hate us now more than it did when Bush was in office. Putin is kicking his ass and making him kiss his Superbowl ring. China has no respect for him. And, Iran, Turkey, which may be nearing a Tienanmen Square moment, and Syria laugh at his red lines knowing that they can ‘call his bluff’ better than Eric Cantor. Can he possibly not understand that he cannot continue to support the Muslim Brotherhood because, to do so, would rain further harm down upon himself, the country, and the world?

The dude is a flucking global disaster, as is his entire administration.

After this, can we not understand why Egyptians would be carrying these placards...

I'd say that Egyptians have come to recognise that Obama and his administration cannot be trusted much quicker than Americans have.

One last thing - only because I have been savouring this moment for more than 2 years:

‘...Having said that, I think basically for the last three or four weeks THE SKEPTICS HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE TOO SKEPTICAL.

THE NAYSAYERS WHO SAID IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN, it's going to be violent, HIS DEPARTURE WOULD MEAN THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD TAKING OVER OR TOTAL CHAOS IN THE STREETS OF EGYPT, THEY HAVE BEEN PROVEN WRONG.

And the notion that the Egyptian people have managed to pull off this democratic, peaceful removal of a dictator, AND NOW HAVE A SEEMINGLY A PRETTY STABLE SITUATION IN THE STREETS OF CAIRO AND THE OTHER BIG CITIES, with the guarantee or at least a promise of a transition to free and fair elections AND NO REAL SENSE THAT THOSE ELECTIONS ARE -- YET THAT THE ELECTIONS ARE GOING TO GO IN SOME TERRIBLE DIRECTION FOR THE U.S. OR FOR EGYPT ITSELF.

I think this may be a case WHERE THE NORMAL WORLDLY PESSIMISM IS TOO PESSIMISTIC AND THE NORMAL CYNICISM IS TOO CYNICAL, and ONE HAS A RIGHT TO ACTUALLY BE HOPEFUL ABOUT THESE DEVELOPMENTS IN EGYPT.

- Bill Kristol, Fox News Sunday, 13 February 2011

How's that 'Arab Spring' working out for ya now, Billy, old boy, old pal?

PS:  Are we nearing a Tianenman Square moment in Erdoğan's Turkey, another one of Obama's pals?
