Portman's Evolution? Bad. Obama's Revolution? Good.

So, Senator Rob Portman has 'evolved' on gay marriage.  Looking a gift horse in the mouth, the Left has promptly called him a 'hypocrite' because his reasons are personal.  Their argument is that an individual's personal experience shouldn't play a role when it comes to the constitutional and civil rights of others.  They have a point, but they have been very selective in making it.

Because, of course, the Left gave President Obama a pass...

'I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian — for me — for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God’s in the mix.”

- Senator Barack Obama,  while running for president, defining marriage at the Saddleback Presidential Forum, 17 April 2008

'I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that’s not what America’s about.”

- Senator Barack Obama, in an interview with MTV while running for President, 2 November 2008

'I have been to this point unwilling to sign on to same-sex marriage primarily because of my understandings of the traditional definitions of marriage. But I also think you’re right that attitudes evolve, including mine.”

- President Barack Obama, in an interview with a group of liberal bloggers, 27 October 2010

'Every single American — gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender — every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It’s a pretty simple proposition.'

- President Barack Obama, speaking at the Human Rights Campaign annual national dinner, 1 October 2011

'I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.'

- President Barack Obama, in interview with Robin Roberts of ABC News, 9 May 2012

Of course, President Obama didn't really EVOLVEHe REVOLVED.   He supported SSM in 1996:

Obama in 1996: “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages."
