Colorado Lawmaker: People Don't Need Guns To Defend Themselves Since They Can Use Ballpoint Pens

Ooooh, it's black and skeery looking.  It must be an assault pen!  Can you imagine the fear that will strike the hearts of criminals when they see it?

Oh the people of Colorado must be brimming with pride this evening, as one of their very own Democrat lawmakers has thrown his opinion into the gun debate, saying people don’t need to defend themselves from a mass shooting by firing back with their own guns.  But rather, they can simply subdue the armed madman when he tries to reload using a ballpoint pen.

No, seriously
.
Jessie Ulibarri had this to say to Colorado’s Senate Judiciary Committee…

Via RevealPolitics (h/t Ben):

"Thank you, Madame Chair.  I did just want to say … and, um … I know that comment was made a bit lighthearted to our witness.  But I … um … I don’t think we should take it lighthearted that when Congressman Giffords was shot and there was a shooting in an Arizona supermarket, people who were unarmed took that person down when he stopped to reload.  And so there are other ways to address violence and it doesn’t mean we have our kids exposed to a whole crossfire of multiple folks in a room shooting simultaneously.  And that Congressman Giffords life was saved and so many others when very valiant folks stood up to defend themselves and protect themselves.  And they did it with ballpoint pens."

Aside from the fact that not everyone can go full MacGyver and fashion themselves a weapon out of a nearby writing utensil, Ulibarri is actually suggesting that the proper defense is to wait until the gunman has stopped to reload before starting a counterattack.

[Note:  Jared Lee Loughner was NOT stopped with ballpoint pens]

You know who that didn’t work out for, Mr. Ulibarri?  Satwant Singh Kaleka, who was the president of a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that fell victim to a deadly shooting this past August.

A Huffington Post article provided proof in a single sentence that guns don’t kill people, gun control kills people…

“The dead included temple President Satwant Singh Kaleka, who was shot as he tried to fend off the shooter with a butter knife.“

It wasn’t quite the same weapon of choice that Ulibarri favors, but you get the point.

Here’s the video…
